LONDON — Britain's wealthiest man, Gopichand Hinduja, condemned the U.K.'s departure from the European Union, but threw his backing behind Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's ability to revive the country's ailing economy. "The step taken of Brexit was not good for the U.K.," Hinduja told CNBC's Tanvir Gill in London on Monday. Britain voted to leave the European Union in 2016 and formally exited the bloc at the end of Jan. 2020. None of those partnerships will be more valuable to the U.K. than its forthcoming free trade arrangement (FTA) with India, according to Hinduja. "The biggest help the U.K. can get is from India, because India's economy, by 2027, will be the third largest in the world," he said.

London Reuters —Srichand Hinduja, the Indian-born billionaire leader of a global business empire and the patriarch of Britain’s wealthiest family, has died aged 87, his daughters said on Wednesday. “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father,” Hinduja’s daughters Shanu and Vinoo said in a statement. More recently the brothers have been embroiled in a feud over the future of their business empire and Gopichand had challenged the legitimacy of a lasting power of attorney granted to Srichand’s daughters. Gopichand and Srichand’s daughters had reached an apparent truce, but a lawyer representing Srichand’s interests told a London court last month that that agreement was at risk. “Amongst other things, SP will be remembered for his great contributions in bringing India and its culture to the global stage through his work and philanthropic efforts,” Hinduja’s daughters said.
King Charles has a personal fortune worth nearly $750 million, The Sunday Times reported. Analysis by the London newspaper found he is worth about $285 million more than the late Queen. It generated £23 million ($28.5 million) in profits last year and £212 million ($263 million) in the decade to 2022. He is likely to be ahead of David and Victoria Beckham, who were worth £380 million ($472 million) in last year's ranking, and Sir Elton John, who was worth £395 million ($490 million). As King, Charles is now in control of the Crown Estate, worth about £15.6 billion ($19.4 billion).
The India chairman of conglomerate Hinduja Group said he's bullish on India, which he called "the very great emerging, fast moving market." The Hinduja Group is headquartered in India though it owns businesses across many industrial sectors and has a presence in nearly 40 countries, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the United States. "The credit goes to our prime minister," he said, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Tensions between India and China sharpened in 2020 after their troops clashed on a shared border, and remain strained. More recently, Western countries have criticized India for increasing its purchases of Russian oil as that country's invasion Ukraine rumbles on.
